WHITE PAPER

Catalyzing methanol synthesis

Modern technological developments, increasing methanol demand, and the low cost in some regions of natural gas have led to the rise of today’s world-scale methanol plants. There is considerable incentive to take advantage of economy of scale and maximize single-line capacity. Achieving this requires optimal process efficiency and one of the simplest solutions is operation with a state-of-the-art methanol synthesis catalyst, such as Topsoe’s MK-151 FENCE™ catalyst.

This white paper contains:
  • The methanol synthesis catalyst: Within heterogeneous catalysis, the concept of supported catalysts is well-known. The active phase, typically a metal, is dispersed on a porous support having a high and stable surface area. In the Cu/ZnO/ Al2 O3 catalyst used for methanol synthesis, the active phase constitutes 40-50 wt % of the catalyst.
  • FENCE™ technology: The basic principle of FENCE ™ is to stabilize the finely dispersed copper particles in the catalyst by creating a separation between them of multiple metal oxide particles.
  • Advantages of MK-151 FENCE™: As part of catalyst development, numerous tests confirmed that the activity and stability of MK-151 FENCE™ surpassed those of MK-121.
  • Proof of performance – industrial experience: One of the world’s most energy- efficient methanol plants is based on Topsoe technology and catalyst.
